”The reason why I do this work is because I feel that this work is needed. When I made it to junior high school, I started having problems with understanding my work and I really didn’t have anyone to go to. But my mom not wanting to be made fun of was embarrassed to not know certain things. I always felt that my mom thought that I knew everything that I was supposed to know. Not true. I needed help.
But going through that made me be aware when I had my own children. I paid attention to everything my son did even when he was doing his homework in silence. He told me that he never reads out loud. If you don’t read out loud, then you’re not a good reader. His words were that he made good grades. The next morning, I went to the school and talked to his teacher, Miss Greer. I told her that my son cannot read. She said, “Oh, he will be OK.” I told her no ma’am and please do not pass my son. He was in the third grade. She passed him. I went to the Board of Education and I got him put back in the third grade.
My family was mad, but I know it was the best choice for my son and now he reads everything he gets his hands on and he’s 34 years old today The reason why I do this work is because it’s needed and I know that there’s moms out there like me.
